What Is Large Format Print?

When we say large, we’re talking BIG! Large format printing is also known as wide format printing. They are effectively the same thing, and both mean you can print your designs on a large range of materials and products, from banner stands to large indoor or outdoor posters and public space media.

Digital large format printing v litho printing

Both litho and digital large format printing have their unique advantages, with each process suitable for different jobs and applications.

We use cutting edge, large format flat-bed and roll-feed digital printing equipment, which use inks and a process similar to an office inkjet printer. Lithographic printing uses wet ink and printing plates, which have an image burned into them and transferred or offset onto the printing surface.

Hence litho printing requires more time and money to set up, so it’s usually used for longer print runs. The convenience of digital printing is perfect for shorter runs and one off prints such as those required for large format print.

• Use Vector (.eps) graphics rather than JPG, JPEG and BMP images. Vector graphics are made up of ‘paths’ instead of pixels and can be easily scaled to extremely large sizes without loss of image quality.
  
  
• PDF or TIFF file formats are good for final artwork as these are less likely to suffer compression or loss of detail.
  
  
• Large format printed products are excellent for brand awareness and getting noticed, so think carefully about the design, fonts, colours and images used.  

• Using a print company who can offer design team support and direction helps make sure the finished product is exactly what you were expecting.
